Micromax Canvas 6 review: At Rs 13999, the smartphone will face stiff competition

Micromax has been on the path of restructuring and has come up with a refined new logo. At its rebranding event, we saw an array of announcements and of course we didn’t miss the hidden message in its new ad. The company grabbed eyeballs by announcing 19 new products last month, out of which 15 were smartphones, and Canvas 6 and 6 Pro took the centre stage. Both carry the same price while catering to different user segments. We’ve got our hands on the Canvas 6 and taken it for a spin in our labs.

Build and Design: 7/10

The Micromax Canvas 6 credits a few firsts for the company – a unibody metal design and a fingerprint scanner – to begin with. But the metal body ensures it isn’t among the lightest 5.5-inchers available in the market. We got the champagne gold unit, which looked pretty classy, we must add. The bezel-less design lets the display cover the entire front side, with power and volume toggle buttons on right edge, and a hybrid SIM-storage slot on the left side. There’s an audio jack on top, and speaker grilles and microUSB port on the lower edge.

Turn it around and the back sports the new Micromax logo on the lower side and a rear snapper, LED and fingerprint scanner on the upper side. It’s a good looking device, but the sharp edges may bother some users (read me) for those who prefer smoother curves instead.

Google’s Chrome OS will soon be able to run all Android apps

The Play Store is coming to Chrome OS, Google announced at its I/O developer conference today — and with that, you will soon be able to install and run virtually any Android app on your Chromebooks and Chromeboxes.

It’s no secret that Google has been working on this project for quite a while now. You were already able to run a few Android apps on Chrome OS before, too. This new project, however, uses a completely different technology. As Chrome OS director of product manager Kan Liu told me, the earliest version used ARC (the Android Runtime for Chrome) and Native Client.

Moto G4 Plus Review

It's no secret that India loves Motorola's Moto line of smartphones. Strong sales of both the Moto G and Moto E series have helped Motorola (or to be precise now, Moto by Lenovo) secure a strong foothold in the Indian market. Among all the phones under the Moto brand, the Moto G series has been the most popular. In our opinion, Moto G smartphones have always struck a good balance between features and price, not to mention that undeniable dependability of software updates that the entire series enjoys.

After Motorola Mobility's acquisition by Lenovo, the fourth generation Moto G marks the debut of Lenovo's branding on a Moto smartphone. The classic Motorola logo is present too but it's pretty clear that Lenovo aims to make Moto a sub-brand of itself, especially considering the company's plans to replace its Vibe range with Moto smartphones.

The Moto G (Gen 3) (Review) and the Moto G (Turbo Edition) (Review) were both solid performers but if we had any criticism, it would have to be their lacklustre camera performance, which Motorola has struggled with on pretty much all of its phones. The Moto G4 Plus, a better equipped version of the Moto G4, aims to change that perception for good with its improved camera and software. Let's see how well it succeeds in achieving its goal.

Lenovo Zuk Z1

Lenovo Zuk Z1 smartphone was launched in May 2016. The phone comes with a 5.50-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels at a PPI of 401 pixels per inch. 

The Lenovo Zuk Z1 is powered by 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and it comes with 3GB of RAM. The phone packs 64GB of internal storage cannot be expanded. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Lenovo Zuk Z1 packs a 13-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 8-megapixel front shooter for selfies.

 

The Lenovo Zuk Z1 runs Android 5.1.1 and is powered by a 4100mAh non removable battery. It measures 155.70 x 77.30 x 8.90 (height x width x thickness) and weighs 175.00 grams. 

The Lenovo Zuk Z1 is a dual SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts two Nano-SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G, 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India). Sensors on the phone include Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, and Gyroscope.

Samsung Pay strikes partnership with Chinese online payment giant Alipay

Samsung announced today that it has cemented a deal that will make Alipay, China’s largest online payments platform, available through Samsung Pay.

The partnership, made between Samsung Electronics and Ant Financial, the Alibaba financial tech affiliate that owns Alipay,  is important because Alipay is one of the most formidable rivals mobile payments like Samsung Pay and Apple Pay face as they tackle the Chinese market.

Alipay, which claims about 450 million active registered users, launched the Alipay Wallet smartphone app, which stores credit card and coupon information and can be used for offline payments, back in 2013.

Samsung Pay expanded into China at the end of March, about six weeks after Apple Pay’s debut there.

Apple has reportedly been trying to strike a similar agreement with Alibaba since last year. The deal hasn’t been announced yet, but the popularity of iPhones in China—they still hold about a 14.6 percent market share, despite competition from Android rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi—means it would not be surprising if one was announced soon, too.

Samsung Pay users can now link their Alipay accounts and make payments with the service’s NFC and MST technology to checkout at retail stores. They can also access Alipay’s QR codes through the Samsung Pay.

The advantage of tying up with Alipay are obvious for Samsung Pay. Alipay also benefits, however, because Samsung Pay’s technology will allow it to expand into more offline businesses.

In a press statement, Fan Zhiming, the president of Ant Financial’s payment business unit, said the partnership will allow Alipay to expand its reach beyond e-commerce:

“Alipay covers the vast majority of online payment use cases. At the same time, it also developed a variety of offline use cases, including restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, taxis, hospitals, and public services. The technology integration facilitated by this partnership with Samsung Electronics will make the payment process faster and more convenient when users make payments at stores where Alipay is accepted.”

Alipay claims to be accepted at about 600,000 brick and mortar retail stores in China, as well as in over one million taxis.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to launch on September 25, sources claim

A report from South Korea has surfaced claiming that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will enter mass production in June-July to be ready for a wide global release soon after its announcement at the upcoming IFA (which starts the first week of September).

Just like the Note 3 last year, the Galaxy Note 4 will be launched on September 25 globally. This info reportedly comes from multiple shareholders, who have knowledge on the matter.

The new Note is expected to have a 5.7" Super AMOLED screen with QHD resolution and will come intwo versions – a Snapdragon 805 one and an Exynos 5433 one. Both will have 3GB of RAM, 32GB storage and run Android 4.4.3 with the latest TouchWiz.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to have a 16MP main camera and a 3.68MP front-facing camera (QHD = 3.68MP). Whether or not it will come in a curved-screen version and one with a three-sided screen remains to be seen.
